Another S&W model 19 Refinishing Project Part 1

This is the third Smith & Wesson model 19 that I have refinished. The gun was probably an LEO trade in, the gomers at Century International Arms put their name into the side of it. It could be that this gun was imported back to the U.S. or it could just be a surplus gun that they decided to use as a bill board

You can see the grip has been modified to allow better access with a speed loader.

Someone rounded off the rear sight

The aforementioned advert that will be removed, the color case hardening on the hammer and trigger appear to be in good shape.

First step is disassembly

The rear sight gets completely disassembled

The new rear sight, next to the beat up, rounded off one.

Someone had used some pliers on the ejector rod before, the proper way to removed the rod, is to insert some empty brass in the cylinder and then secure the ejector rod in a vice between two pieces of pine wood.

The parts that will need to be reblued (the side plate is installed on the other side)

We'll start by with some graffiti abatement. For those who want to know, it is not illegal to remove the import stamp, as long as the stamp does not include a serial number (I have a letter from the ATF).

then I remove the bluing from the areas in which I will be sanding, not completely necessary for this job, but it saves on sand paper

Then we start sanding, 320 grit, then move up until we have the whole gun sanded to 2000 grit

You can see the "handling marks" on the trigger guard.

To remove the pitting, I started with 150 grit sand paper and worked my way up sanding in multiple directions

Stay tuned for part 2
