Tincanbandit's Must See Movie List Take 2

It is the time of year when the weather turns crappy and we are forced to spend more time indoors. This is not a comprehensive list, just a list of favorites, that if you can't think of a movie to watch, might help you.

If you missed my first list of recommendations, you can find them here

Band of Brothers

I have seen plenty of war movies and documentaries in my time and this is by far the best of them. It is the story of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne. It starts with boot camp and goes through the end of the war. This is not a movie, but a 10 part series.
The stories told were taken directly from those that survived and the episodes even contain interviews with the old vets (many of which have now passed). I have seen this series numerous times and will be watching it again this weekend. Let us honor these brave men by remembering what they sacrificed to keep freedom alive.

The Pacific

The follow up series to the Band of Brothers. It tells the stories of the United States' 1st Marine Division, who fought some of the bloodiest battles of World War II. The stories are real, the emotions, the sacrifice, the losses. You will want to watch this one as well.

archer

While not technically a movie, the archer TV show franchise could easily be adapted to the big screen. A politically incorrect, self absorbed and possibly alcoholic American Super Spy...

It has been described as James Bond meets Arrested Development (partially because the creators and part of the cast came from that show and well, the show is obviously inspired by the 007 franchise.). The show uses sex, drugs, Rock and Roll (well Outlaw Country actually) and booze...lots of booze to tell the story of a private spy agency ran by Sterling Archer's mother, Mallory. His on and off again girlfriend and fellow spy is as hot as the girl who voices her (if that were possible..), Aisha Taylor. Anyway, give it a shot and see what you think. Check your local listings to catch the motley crew on FXX, back episodes are available on Netflix.

They wrapped up their 8th season in 2017, but are on deck for two more seasons.

You can see my post on the Guns of archer here.

the nice guys

What can I tell you about the nice guys? It is part comedy, part thriller, part crime drama.
The story line would fit any 1950's detective film. Although the shooting scenes can be a bit ridiculous it is definitely worth the watch. Set in 1970's swinging Hollywood, the cast and acting are superb, the story line is quirky yet entertaining.

The Ghost and the Darkness

Loosely based on the true story of the "Tsavo Maneaters", a pair of lionesses that were killing and eating the workers brought into Kenya to build a railroad. A couple of men are brought in to solve the problem.
Excellent cinematography and writing.

Spectre

Another great movie from the 007 franchise. I could include everyone of the Bond movies, but the new ones really seem to hit the mark. It must be difficult to make a Bond movie that is realistic, yet still appears to be beyond the realm of normal. At any rate it is worth a watch

NARCOS

This one is also not a movie but a mini-series. Narcos first two seasons tells the story of the most prolific and violent drug dealer in history, el jefe de mal (the boss of evil): Pablo Escobar.
In season three they follow the king pins from the Cali Cartel who fill the void left by Escobar.

There is lots of violence and guns of course play a key role.

Road to Perdition

I recently watched this movie again and figured it belonged here on the list. The story of an Irish Mobster during the 1920s. Jude Law makes and excellent bad guy...Tom Hanks is convincing as an all business mobster. I can't say too much without giving the plot away.

John Wick

I can't believe I waited until Chapter Two was released to see the original. The plot line of both movies is as old as Hollywood, but that doesn't slow this movie down. It is worth a watch. Say what you want about Keanu's acting, but he trained for this movie with Taran Butler, and could probably win a 3-gun match on any given weekend....he is that good.

John Wick Chapter 2

The sequel picks up where the first movie left off. Revenge is served ice cold in this one....

V for Vendetta

In a dystopian world in which the United States has collapsed and the UK is living under total government control, a man, in the spirit of Guy Fawkes ignites the fire of revolution. While not a gun movie per se, it does capture the spirit of freedom.

Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For

If you liked the first Sin City movie, you will enjoy this one as well. Many of the same characters are back, some new bad guys and a very bad girl. The well assembled cast should be enough to draw your attention, but what really sets these movies apart is the way in which the story is presented, like a comic book that has come to life.

I never thought I would go for a movie like this, but after seeing them both I am left hoping Frank Miller has another in the works.

The Magnificent Seven

This is a remake of the original western from 1960. The plot is a bit different and the cinematography is better. A couple of things this movie has in common with the original....a heavyweight cast including Denzel Washington (as Sam Chisolm) who's character may very well have been based on the real life Bass Reeves.
Chris Pratt who plays Joshua Faraday a border line alcoholic, gambler, magician and gunfighter. The character could have based on a composite of Doc Holiday and John Wesley Hardin.
Ethan Hawk as Confederate war hero Goodnight Robicheaux, a character which could have been a composite of Doc Holiday mixed with Jesse James.
The other thing this movie has in common with the original is gun fighting and lots of it. I wont spoil the ending, but it is worth the watch.

The Accountant

An autistic man with a brilliant mind and a killer's instinct is not someone you want to cross. Ben Affleck does a yeoman's job in this one, showing he is not a one dimensional actor.
