This Week in Firearms History:

November 26: In 1789 the 1st national Thanksgiving in America; 1853 William Barclay "Bat" Masterson is born; in 1926 John Moses Browning dies.

November 27: In 1793 Eliphalet Remington is born; in 1924 the 1st Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held in NY; in 1934 George "Babyface" Nelson is gunned down by the FBI in Barrington IL; 

November 28: In 1717 Blackbeard captures a French slave ship and renames it "Queen Anne's Revenge"; in 1989 the "Velvet Revolution" takes place in Czechoslovakia.

November 29: In 1847 the Whitman Massacre, the Whitman party are murdered by Cayuse and Umatilla Indians, sparking the Cayuse War; 1887 US is given rights to use Pearl Harbor from Hawaiians 

November 30: In 1810 Oliver Winchester is born; in 1930 G. Gordon Liddy is born; in 2001 Gary Ridgeway is arrested for the Green River Killings.

December 1: In 1884 the Frisco (TX) Shootout begins; in 1969 the 1st draft lottery is held in the US since WWII.

December 2: In 1859 abolitionist John Brown is hanged for treason against the state of Virginia; in 1993 drug kingpin Pablo Escobar is gunned down in Medellin Columbia.

Gun of the Week: Smith & Wesson Model 61 Escort

The Smith & Wesson model 61 "Escort" is a small 22 pistol that owes its existence to a gun control law.

In 1968 the Democrats in the US House and Senate passed the unconstitutional Gun Control Act of 1968, banning the importation of small handguns. The void left in the market led to American gun makers to produce pistols to satisfy the demand.

The design for the pistol was borrowed from the Pieper-Bayard pistol that was manufactured from 1908 to 1930.

65,438 S&W version of the gun were made between 1970 and 1973. The pistol was chambered in .22 LR and available in two finishes, blued with faux wood grain plastic grip panels and satin nickel with faux mother of pearl.

Cartridge of the Week: 460 S&W Magnum

The 460 Smith & Wesson Magnum has the highest velocity of any revolver cartridge.

Developed as a magnum version of the .454 Casull, which in turn was a magnum version of the .45 Colt. Smith & Wesson chambered their X-Frame revolver in the round in 2005.

The revolver can also chamber and fire the .45 Schofield, .45 Colt, .454 Casull.

Bullets weight between 200 and 400 grains and move at speeds between 1500 fps and 2400 fps.
