Kerosene the machinist's conventionally accepted lube for aluminum and will keep your file from dragging which may be the root cause for the skipping problem you had. You may have to experiment a little to see ho much works best, i.e. a thin film of the lube, or even have your work-piece slightly submerged in the kerosene so that the file glides smoothly.
